Description

This extremely rare chest of drawers is of a most unusual design for this period. It is veneered in fiddle-back padauk which has a wonderful satin-like figured grain. This veneer would have been a highly prized timber to work with. This small Batchelor's chest was designed to be dual purpose. Having three graduated lower oak lined drawers and a false top one, above this false drawer is a pull out writing slide which is inlaid with a finely tooled leather, and to facilitate ease of use a drawer has been fitted into each side of the chest for storage when writing this produces a large working area. The right-hand side is fitted for pens and an ink bottle. The brass handles, escutcheons and locks are all original. The chest stands on shaped bracket feet. This delightful small piece of early English furniture is rare, very original and has fine colour and patination.
