Antique Tribal Kuba Janus Head Palm Wine Cup

Description
This is a really unusual tribal carving from the Kuba Kingdom or the Kingdom of Bakuba or Bushongo in central Africa. The Kuba Kingdom flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries in the region bordered by the Sankura, Lulua and Kasai rivers in the Republic of the Congo.The wine cup is beautifully carved with stylised detail to the head and hair, raised facial scarring detail and pouting lips with almond shaped eyes. It stands on unusual triangular shaped feet. The cup is in solid hardwood carved from one piece and has a wonderful rich colour and patina.
The cup measures 35.5 cms in height.
