Description

This is a good quality Meiji period Japanese shibayama plaque dating from around 1890. A very attractive scene depicting a dove in a blossoming tree and another bird pecking around on the ground has been skilfully hand carved in mother of pearl, abalone shell, bone and hardwood. There is a sweet little frog sat at the foot of the tree and a separate inset plaque with the artists signature carved and coloured in red relief to the opposite corner. The shibayama work has been applied to a wooden plaque and is framed within a smart hardwood frame. This is a good sized decorative piece which measures 74 cms by 53 cms.
