Description

This charming stagecoach travelling trunk really is a very fine example of early leather luggage. The wooden trunk is leather bound with a domed top and studded banding. It has twin brass swing handles and most remarkably is complete with original key and working lock. The trunk is in great original condition with a really characterful look to the leather and an attractive glow to the copper studding. The leather weatherproof skirt around the lid is also remarkably still complete and intact as this will have been strapped to the roof of travelling stagecoaches in the Regency period. There are the remains of several early labels attached to the chest such as Redhill, Margate etc. The inside of the trunk is lined out neatly with a newspaper from 1817.
A very good original example dating from the early 1800s.
This has neat proportions and measures 54 cms long, 34 cms wide and 34 cms high.
