Description

Late 17th century open armchair. Made from oak, the slat back is carved and pierced, the design continuing into the top-rail with a central carved crown motif. Barley twist decoration throughout, the scrolled arms and a general lightness of form shows the taste for European styles that Charles Ⅱ brought to the British oak tradition in 1660.
The solid pine seat is possibly a replacement. There is a small inset repair to the back of the top rail (see photograph). Circa 1690.
