Bilston Enamel Motto Compact Patch Box

Description

This is a fabulous Bilston piece - Blue enamelled with a white to the words "I love too well to kiss and tell" - It uses the letter "f" rather than "s", this was dropped from the English language in 1780, giving us some sort of time line. Oval shaped, measuring c. 1.5" inch across the top, the top is secured to the hinge at the back and fits snugly opening to reveal a mirror to the top, I think it is more likely to be a patch box due to the mirror. There are a couple of hairline flaws commensurate with age (see supersized pics), but they do not detract in my opinion, a small amount of enamel is missing to the base. So difficult to find these rare original pieces in this sort of order. Dating 18th Century, it is a delicate piece that has however survived - I know this will find its way to an appreciative buyer.
