LARGE HENRY ELKINGTON INKWELL PRODUCED FOR THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF 1851

A Magnificent and scarce Victorian electrotype silver plate Great Exhibition Inkstand by Elkington & Co 1859, by Elkington & Co originally made for the 1851 London Exhibition. In 1851 Elkington & Co exhibited to great acclaim at the Great Exhibition held at Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, organised by Prince Albert and Henry Cole as an international showcase for modern technology and industrial achievement.

This piece was Designed by John Leighton (1822-1912) designer and illustrator. The top decorated with nine vignettes of various craftsmen and the outer border with names of celebrated artisans upon an undulating ribbon, centered by a gilt globe embellished with ribbons, reeding and the inscription "Exhibition of Industry of all Nations in London 1851".

The rim engraved with the words "Published as the Act Directs by Henry Elkington 1851".

An identical example can be seen in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
