19th century Oak four-fold screen, depicting deer hunting scenes. The four oil paintings on canvas are all signed and dated, ‘Paul Frenzeny 1891.’ Born in France Frenzeny went to North America in the 1860's to serve under Marshall Bazaine, commander of the French army in Mexico. It seems some time in the late sixties he arrived in New York City, for between 1868 and 1873 he worked for "Harpers Weekly". Commissioned by Harpers, with Jules Tavernier, another Frenchman, to travel across America and record the landscape and peoples lives in remote unexplored areas. It took the two almost a year to cross the country and they ended up in San Francisco. Frenzeny stayed in San Francisco for a few years and participated in the art life of that city, becoming a member of the Bohemian club. He alone did sketches for Harpers between 1876-1878 and into the early 80's of California and Nevada and in 1879 Harpers published some drawings by him of Central America, the route he took back to New York. Frenzeny provided seven illustrations for " The Campfires of the Everglades" or "Wild Sports in the South" by Charles N Whitehead, a book published in Edinburgh in 1891. He also provided more than one hundred illustrations for Harrington O'Reilly's "Fifty Years on the Trail", his last known publication. The last decade of Paul Frenzeny's life is undocumented. It is believed he died in London in 1902. This screen is an exceptionally rare piece that encompasses four works of art within one item.
