'Cullercoats from the South' by Artist Carmichael, John Wilson (1799 – 1868). oil on board 14"x10" signed with inital and dated 1845 in original gold swept frame Artist Biography Marine landscape and figure painter in oil and watercolour.Draughtsman, illustrator and drawing master. Born in Newcastle to a shipwright, so he did spend time at sea as a boy. Although he had established his painting workshop by the age of 23, which he shared with landscape painter Thomas Richardson Senior. He began exhibiting in 1825 at the Northumberland Institution for the Promotion of Fine Arts. In 1826 he married a Mary Sweet, they lived at various locations on Tyneside over the next twenty years. He remained a regular exhibitor at Newcastle and also sent work to the Carlise Academy from 1828, the Northern Academy in 1829, the Royal Academy from 1835, Suffolk Street Gallery from 1838 and the British Institution from 1846. Throughout this period Carmichael developed a reputation as one of Northumbria’s best liked and respected marine and landscape artists. He did return to sea to participate officially in the Baltic theatre of the Crimean War. He gave up art and retired to Scarborough, where he died, after the early death of his son. Major exhibitions of his work where held at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle in 1982 in connection with the Newcastle Festival and in 1999 to mark the bicentenary of his birth. He also exhibited his work at the Royal Academy between 1835- 59, the British Institution, the Society of British Artists and elsewhere. His work is now collected internationally and can be seen at Greenwich, National Maritime museum, Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland art galleries.

A fine oil painting by Anne Christopherson (1821-). The pictures is presented signed AC and signed on the reverse, lightly cleaned and framed. Anne Christopherson is a painter on oil and teacher, born in India and married to the artist John Christopherson. Her work is mainly concerned with maritime and industrial scenes based on the Thames. This atmospheric painting depicts Greenwich ancient and modern, the masts of a sailing ship, the rows of back-to-back houses and the bare branches of the tree in the foreground contrasting with the funnel of the ship, the tall arms of cranes and the modern high-rise buildings in the background. A storm gathers over half of picture, perhaps significant of changes to come. Christopherson studied at Bournemouth College of Art from 1946 – 48, Goldsmith’s College of Art, 1950-51, her teachers included Leslie Ward and Kenneth Martin. From 1951-62 she taught art at Blackheath High School and became a member of the Blackheath Art Society, Hampstead Artists’ Council, WIAC and Greenwich Open Studios, and in addition, held a series of solo shows, beginning at the Siri Colvin Gallery (1967). Later shows included Higherwater Gallery (1990). A well-illustrated collection of Christopherson’s work, Greenwich – Times & Tides, appeared in 2001. Her work can be currently seen at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.

A beautiful portrait with an attractive sitter by Theodore Jensen 1816-1894 . Born 21st June 1816, Studied at Dusseldorf Academy. Exhibited at the Royal Academy (5), British Institute (7), & SBA (2) 1854-64 from London. Among his exhibted portraits were 'HRH the Prince of Wales represented in the Robes of the Star of India' and 'HRH the Princess of Wales in State Robes' also an engraver. Signed.

A very finely painted pair of oils by Piffard in original frames untouched canvases. Harold H. Piffard fl. 1895 - 1899 Piffard was a fine painter of military & costume subjects. He exhibited four works at the Royal Academy, two works at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, & several works at Liverpool On leaving Lancing in 1883, Piffard returned to India and was employed on a Darjeeling tea plantation for a while. He returned to England and endeavoured to pursue a theatrical career and also joined an acrobatic troop. He became a successful portrait painter, going back again to India in 1889. Later, he entered the Royal Academy of Arts as a student, and also studied in Paris. A note in the LCM April 1899 congratulates him and another OL, P.A. Robson, on their exhibits at the R.A. Piffards two paintings had displayed &a power of detail&. Some of his best paintings were of military subjects and he exhibited at the R.A. from 1895-99. Harold Hume Piffard OL (School House 1877-83) built and piloted the very first aeroplane to fly from Shoreham, spurred on by the offer of a crate of champagne from Alfred Evans of the Sussex Pad Inn
