Memorial plaque to Viscount Admiral Lord Nelson By Mark Heapy The photographs show a memorial plaque to Admiral Lord Nelson carved in Pine which stands 64” high and 40” wide and there are no signs that the carving was ever painted but it certainly appears to be early 19th century. Currently there is no knowledge or evidence of where the plaque came from but I am investigating two possibilities of where the plaque came from and for whom or what the plaque was made for. The first theory is that in 1806 following the death of Admiral Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, competitions were held throughout Britain and indeed throughout British territories to design lasting memorials in his honour. It is believed that this memorial plaque which is carved and made of Pine is a mock up made for such a competition, pine is relatively easy to carve and would be the obvious choice for such an exercise. The other theory is that it came off a ship? It is possible that it came from an area at the top of the stern gallery of a ship called the gingerbread, which was an area that was decoratively carved, but would such a memorial feature be located on the stern gallery of a ship? It may have been located within the ship where the battle board is located to remind the seamen of their great hero. One very good possibility is that it came from a ship called HMS Nelson and this would make sense. On 23 November 1805 a 120 gun first rate ship of the line was commissioned called HMS Nelson it was to be built at Woolwich dock yard she was laid down in December 1809 and was launched on 14 July 1814. She was converted into a screw ship in 1860 being cut down to a two decker and fitted with an engine of 2102ihp for a speed of 10.5 knots. In 1865 she was gifted to the colony of Victoria as a training ship, she was further cut down to a single deck and served for many years and was eventually broken up in 1928. The design incorporates many of the facets widely used in Nelson memorials, from plaques, porcelain, bronzes, medallions, engravings and countless other items that were produced at the time, they are the grieving sailor, the side profile of Nelsons head set upon the shield of Britannia depicting the union flag, in another shield are carved the names of the battles, The Nile, Copenhagen and Trafalgar which brought Nelson fame and glory. Also depicted are flags, and standards, all set upon items from a man of war which include a broken mast which represents the end of life. I am currently endeavouring to trace the history of the item by tracing back it’s previous owners which is proving very difficult as no documentation is available but tracing the item back through a couple of antique dealers it is believed the item was owned by Clough Williams Ellis, the renowned architect who famously built the Italian style village in Portmeirion in Wales. It is believed that he bought the item from a naval dockyard in the 1930’s, which would coincide with the date of 1928 when HMS Nelson was broken up. My conclusion at this time has led me to believe that the strongest theory on where the memorial plaque came from is that the item came from a ship, and maybe it is HMS Nelson? It definitely would make sense that such a ship would have on board some kind of tribute in the memory of Admiral Lord Nelson. With thanks to Keith Evans, John Diestler and the National Maritime Museum

A shipyard model of the Clan Mac Nab launched in 1891 and built by Alexander Stephen and Sons, Linthouse, Glasgow. She was one of three orders that followed the setting up of The Clan Line Steamers Ltd which rather surprisingly for this date produced a clipper bowed design. They were however the first Clan Line ships built with triple expansion engines. In 1902 and 1903 all three ships were sold to Furness Withy for their service from London to Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for which passenger accommodation was added. In 1903 she was renamed St John city. In 1909 she was sold to the Anglo Hellenic Steamship Co Ltd and renamed Pontos. In 1915 she was taken over by the Admiralty and scuttled as a block ship at Scapa Flow where she remains to this day. Survey details from the Hydrographic office 1st September 1992.The wreck lies 12 metres off the SE end of the barrier. It is clearly visible. The forward section has a distinctive tall mast still standing. Two empty life boat davits can be seen just aft of the mast. The wreck is well corroded but substantially intact.
