Japanese bronze jardinière, hexagon shaped with embossed decoration. Two shaped bronze snails with bamboo cane between them make up each of the two handles. This jardiniere is designed to be used with a liner, which is not included. The item stands on four feet with a decorative face depicted upon each. Each side of the hexagon shaped body depicts various scenes, tigers, serpents, trees and foliage. This item is in good condition, although does have wear to the brass around the bottom edges, meaning it is not watertight. These small worn holes would allow water to seep out, although it is not advisable to use antique jardinieres without a liner as it would damage the bronze. Superb quality screen printed silk kimono. In fully lined figured cream silk,with screen printed design of leaves and branches in iron red, black, green, blue and gold.We believe this to be from late 1950's - early 1960's. Unworn/un-used - hemline still has original tacking stitches in it. We were told that this was originally owned by the widow of a diamond mine owner living in South Africa. Antique Japanese Hand Carved Panel Depicting a Scene from The Traditional Japanese Fable 'The Eighty One Brothers' Date Meiji Period c1890 This rare and attractive Japanese mahogany panel has been hand carved in relief. It depicts a scene from an old Japanese fable called 'The Eighty One Brothers' a transcript of this story is included below. The design is of the hare belonging to the Princess of Inaba, running across the crocodiles in the sea as a bridge from Tajima, on the north coast of Japan to Cape Keta. The hand carving is in both deep and shallow relief and emphasis the movement of the hare through the waves. It is framed in the original ebonised frame. The large size of this panel, 58 inches by 17.5 inches, makes it an unusual and attractive focus in a room. The influence of Japanese design from this period on the English Arts and Crafts Movement is well known and this is clearly seen in this carving. English designers from the late 19th centaury, such as E. W. Godwin, traveled to Japan and were taken by the simplicity of the Japanese design which they incorporated into their designs.
