A fine French brass-cased four-glass mantel clock A.D. Mougin, Paris, for J.W. Benson, Ludgate Hill Having a 4.75-inch white-enamelled Arabic chapter ring with floral swag decoration framing a gilt centre with Brocot escapement over inscription "J.W. BENSON LUDGATE HILL, LONDON. FRENCH MADE", the two-train movement half-hour striking on a coiled gong, stamped "A.D. MOUGIN DEUX MEDAILLES" and numbered 47526, the arched case with bevelled glazing and cast foliage, flaming torch and quiver of arrows on four block feet h mercury two-jar pendulum plus winded. Antique marble mantle clock. This very rare and possibly unique sold by 'Maple and Co' Paris and made by renowned Parisien makers, Samuel Marti et cie. The clock is made from a variegated marble with stepped and canted corners. To the front these are decorated with Egyptian hieroglyphics, some with highlighted gilt decoration. The body of the clock I believe is black marble and the clock sits on four bronze pads. The top of the clock is surmounted by a large bronze sphinx, which retains it's original patination. The backplate bearing the name of the retailer 'Maple and Co Ltd, Paris' along with the trademark of the clockmaker 'Samuel Marti' showing the award of the 'Medaille d'Argent' in 1889 and stamped with a serial number. Samuel Marti et Cie were well known makers in Paris in the mid nineteenth century. In 1860 it's known that the premises were situated at Le Pays de Montbeliard and in 1863 Marti worked with two other well known maker's, Roux and Japy Freres, in promoting their clock movements. The clock is of good dimensions. This clock has been recently discovered after having sat in empty house in Devon, England, for the past twenty years.

In very good condition this garniture from around 1900 is in working order with a strike on the hour and half hour, it is from Levi Fres, Paris, France. The side pieces a five branch candelabra have plenty of capacity for candles enhancing the detail on clock which carries an urn finial. The mounts are also all in good condition. The clock face is well detailed and also of nice quality.
