Purchased locally, a very handsome mid 19th.c. Welsh glazed display bookcase or kitchen display c.1850. Known as a cwpwrdd gwydr, a type created by North Wales cabinet makers in the mid 19th.c as they updated the design of the traditional Welsh dresser, glazing the rack (gwydr is the Welsh word for glass) and using more fashionable mahogany timbers. Typical of the form it has glazed top with two doors either side of a removable centre panel. Over a large two door cupboard base with two long drawers in the waist. Ogee moulded cornice over a flame mahogany veneered frieze, attractive arch glazing detail and applied acanthus carvings to the top. Fitted with three shelves and retaining the original green/blue painted interior. Arch panels to the base flanked with unusual bobbin turned mouldings, fitted with a single shelf inside. Moulded drawer fronts, bracket feet and a shaped bottom edge to the sides. Excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Keys supplied.
