Vintage Sterling Silver Cherie Compact, Kigu, 1961

Here we have a rare, fine quality and elegant Vintage Sterling Silver Heart Shaped Powder Compact & Mirror. The compact has engine turned decoration to front and back, with the front also having a foliate border and a cartouche bearing the initials A W. There is a slight gold wash on the inside of the compact, with the mirror set in the lid and an inner lid covering the powder and puff.
The compact is made by KIGU of London and dates to 1961. It is part of KIGU's Cherie range of heart shaped compacts but only a tiny fraction of these were ever made in Sterling Silver making this a rare item. KIGU began life in Budapest, Hungary when Gustav Kiaschek took the first two letters of his last and first names to create KI-GU. His youngest son, George, moved to London in the late 1930s and founded KIGU of London. During the heyday of powder compacts in the 1940s, 50s & 60s, KIGU were one of the most famous names and created many different designs in a wide variety of materials. In the early eighties the brand was sold and is now part of a group that also contains Stratton and Mascot.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The mirror is clear and the hinges and clasps on both the outer and inner lids are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The compact is 7.8cm / 3.1ins from top to bottom, 7.5cm / 2.9ins across at the widest point and 1cm / 0.39ins deep. It weighs 104.5g / 3.7oz.
The hallmarks, on the inner tray, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1961 and the K Ltd makers' mark for KIGU of London. There are additional hallmarks on the inside of the lid and on the external catch release, so you can be sure that this is Sterling Silver throughout.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the compact.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
