Vintage Silver Plate Egg Cup & Spoon Set, c.40/50s
This is a very smart cased Vintage Silver Plated Egg Cup & Spoon Set. The interior of the egg cup and the bowl of the spoon are both gilded and the spoon has the name Andrew neatly engraved at the top of the stem. The box is faux snakeskin with a satin lining to the lid and velvet tray for the egg cup.
The set is made by Dawson (Birmingham) Ltd as part of their Unett Plate range and dates to around the 1940s / 50s. During World War Two the factories in Birmingham were all turned over to the war effort and Sheffield was the only place allowed to produce silver plate cutlery and flatware. Like many companies, Dawson (Birmingham) Ltd moved their business to Sheffield and remained there after the war finished. In the mid-1940s they launched their Unett Plate range which took its name from their original premises in Unett Street back in Birmingham. They ceased trading in the early 1960s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the minimal amount of superficial surface wear that you would expect after this period of time. The box is in good condition with both the clasp and hinges in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The egg cup is 9.6cm / 3.8ins across the attached saucer and stands 3.7cm / 1.4ins high. The spoon is 10.1cm / 4ins long. The two together, unboxed, weigh in at 72.4g / 2.5oz.
The underside of the egg cup saucer is marked UNETT PLATE, Made In England and EPNS for silver plate.
