Vintage silver dish with crown handles, R E Stone

Vintage heavy gauge silver dish with crown handles. Hallmarked for London, 1956 with maker's mark for Robert Edgar Stone.
With facsimile signature stamp.
Fluted bowl raised on stepped base.
Robert Edgar Stone (1903-1990)
After serving an apprenticeship, he held all the Goldsmiths Company scholarships whilst at the Central School of Arts & Crafts, London before founding his own workshop in 1929. He worked at 22 Garrick Street, London WC2 where he trained a number of silversmiths such as Ian Calvert and his daughter, Jean who worked with him as a jeweller. He produced a large collection of items commemorating the Silver Jubilee of George V in 1935, which included caddy spoons, bookmarks, letter openers and two handled bowls with a crown coin sunk in the centre. These all featured cast crowns as either the handles or the terminals. He subsequently adapted these designs for the Coronations of Edward VIII in 1936 and George VI in 1937. Asprey and Wilson & Gill retailed many of these, some with an enamel background in the crown. During the 1960s, his work was often seen at the Crafts Centre in Hay Hill, London. A Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, he normally stamped his pieces with a facsimile signature.
He closed his London workshop in 1964, retiring to Dumbartonshire where he continued to produce small pieces which were assay marked in Edinburgh.
