This convertible powder compact is suitable for both loose & solid / pressed face powders or as a handbag mirror.
This is such a beautiful cased vanity set. Made in the 1950s for the Melissa brand. Even the enameled wooden case is in excellent condition. The lid is lined with silk & signed Melissa. The interior base is lined with red velvet. The compact slightly raised on a plinth stationed under the red velvet which tilts it to show it off - a perfect display case. Both the lipstick holder & compact have high quality mother of pearl adorning them - iridescent & very pretty. The compact has an eight point star surrounded by triangular mother of pearl which form a border. The powder well is lined with a waxed paper insert & the original sifter & silk & fabric puff, both of which are very clean. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The mirror is excellent & gives a good clear reflection. The base is decorated with an engine turned design & a push button which will aid the removal of solid pans of face powder. The lipstick holder is also very well made & whereas normally a mother of pearl lipstick holder would have a brass top this one has mother of pearl showing the high standard of workmanship involved in making this set. Often the cases for vanity sets look their age -however this one is just superb - a testimony to what pride there was in British made mid-century items. The case appears to be wood that has been finished with black & gold enamel paint. Remarkably the case does not show any signs of wear which is due to how this has been cared for & also the high quality materials used making this case very durable.
This vintage Melissa compact measures 3 1/4 " & weighs 100 grams.
This vintage Melissa lipstick measures 2 1/4" & weighs 21.2 grams.
