Victorian Silver Sugar Nips, Chawner & Co, 1860

This is a top quality Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Nips. The scissor action nips are fairly plain with oval shaped bowls and stepped decoration at the tops of the arms where they attach to the bowls. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sugar nips were made in London by Chawner & Co and date to 1860. Chawner & Co is considered to be the most important flatware manufacturer in London in the 19th century and they participated in the Great Exhibition in 1851. The company was founded by William Chawner in 1815 after he left his partnership with William Eley and William Fearn. He was succeeded by his widow Mary and later by his son-in-law George Adams. The firm was finally sold to Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater in 1883.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 165 years of good service. The scissor action works smoothly. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar nips are 13.1cm / 5.1ins long and 5.1cm / 2ins across the handles when closed. They weigh in at a respectable 41.7g / 1.47oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, split between the insides of the two handles, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter e for 1860, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G A makers' mark for George Adams of Chawner & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sugar nips.
