Victorian Scottish Silver Basting Spoon, 1853

This is a good quality Victorian Scottish Sterling Silver Basting Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. Basting spoons are the largest standard size of spoons and intended for basting big joints of meat on a spit. Today they make great large size serving spoons. This spoon has the letter S elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The basting spoon is made in Glasgow by Andrew McMillan and dates to 1853. McMillan was registered as a Glasgow watchmaker, jeweller and silversmith in 1837 but his mark is almost exclusively seen on flatware. He remained active into at least the 1860s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the most minimal amount of superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 170 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 31cm / 12.2ins long and weighs a very substantial 107.9g / 3.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion rampant for Scottish Sterling Silver, the tree, bell, fish and bird assay mark for Glasgow, the Gothic date letter I for 1853, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the A McM makers' mark for Andrew McMillan.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoon.
