T. Greenhalgh 1848-1906 Watercolour Church Porch

We are pleased to offer for sale this detailed watercolour of the porch of a Continental church, possibly in France or Belgium, showing a side view of the porch with each supporting column made of a circle of statues. There are more columns with statues of saints and bishops on the facade of the building. There are two groups of women and children clustered outside the entrance to the church, We have tried to find the location of this church, but if anyone recognises it, please let us know. This is one of a pair of watercolours by this artist that we are listing.
THOMAS GREENHALGH, 1848-1906 was a Lancashire artist in oil and watercolour, who exhibited from circa 1880-1897. He painted landscapes, churches and architectural works and appeared to have travelled extensively on the Continent. He was born in Heywood, Rochdale, the youngest of 7 children and, in the Census of 1861 was already listed as a painter. He married his wife Annie in 1871 and after that he moved to Southport where he remained and where he also died.
He exhibited 12 paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 9 at the Manchester City Art Gallery and 6 at the Royal Hibernian Academy. There are 3 of his paintings in the National Collection and these can be view at the Atkinson Art Gallery in Manchester. He was an active member of the Southport Art Association.
The artist is sometimes wrongly listed as J. Greenhalgh and not T. Greenhalgh, as in The Dictionary of British Artists. He is correctly listed in Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Professor Dennis Child.
