Sydney Maiden Watercolour of Hastings 1949 #1

A very detailed unframed ink and watercolour of Hastings in East Sussex signed in ink by Sydney Maiden and dated 1949. The view is of the East Cliff from the Stade in Hastings with fishing boats, net houses and St Nicholas' Church (now the Fishermen's Museum) in the foreground. The view also captures the East Cliff Railway, the steepest funicular railway in the UK, with the twin towers of the upper station at the top of the cliff and the terracotta coloured lower station at the foot of the cliff clearly visible.
On the reverse there is a further signature of Sydney Maiden in ink together with his address in Playden, Rye, East Sussex
This work represents the best from a recently acquired archive of Sydney Maiden's paintings spanning his career from 1920s to 1960s.
Biography: Sydney Joseph Fabricius Maiden was a landscape and figurative painter in oil and watercolour. He was born in India in 1893 and served as an officer in the East Kent Regiment in both wars.
