Small Victorian North Eastern Railway Clock
An original railway antique clock in an oak drop dial case, with an 8-inch diameter dial, dated c.1870.
The clock was manufactured for the NER by Reid & Son of Newcastle upon Tyne. The traditional English drop dial clock case is of well-figured oak with a turned convex surround, held to the back box with three pegs. The side door still retains some of the original Reid repair numbers. The back box is stamped in several places with the initials NER, for North Eastern Railways.
The white painted 8-inch iron dial clock with bold Roman numerals and a cast brass bezel, the dial signed BR 5399.
NER pre-dated the British Rail Eastern Region, hence the dial would have been repainted following the nationalisation in 1948. We know that this one was rewritten by British Railways Doncaster clock repair works.
The quality early English fusee movement has rectangular plates with shaped shoulders and pillars typical of the period.
Records show that this clock was last located at Newcastle Dist. Estate Agent Drawing Office at Clavering House, the records also show that this clock was NER number 322.
To be overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years. We are proud to be one of the UK’s finest suppliers of high quality Antique Clocks. We are based in Somerset, but also serve the rest of the UK. We are also delighted to have a number of overseas customers.
