Sir William Oliphant Hutchison RA. Circa 1930

Sir William Oliphant Hutchison R.A. (1889-1970)
Studied art in Edinburgh and Paris and moved to London in 1921 where he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy. He became President of the Scottish Royal Academy 1950-1957, was knighted in 1953, and in 1965 became President of the Royal Society of Portrait painters. His main field of art was portrait painting and he painted many famous people such as the Queen in her Thistle Robes, the Duke of Edinburgh in uniform, J. Ramsay MacDonald (this portrait now hangs in the House of Commons), friend and fellow artist Sir James Gunn, and many more eminent people of his time ~ these and other examples of his work can be viewed on the internet.
This is very large and superb looking painting by Sir William Oliphant Hutchison RA. Painted Circa 1930.
The sitter is his close friend of the time Norman Williams.
Norman Williams is depicted as Captain MacHeath, the flamboyant Highwayman in the Beggar's Opera, written by John Gay in 1726. From my research I believe that Norman was actually playing the role of Lockit, the corrupt keeper of Newgate Prison. Notably George Baker was Captain Macheath. This element of poetic license may explain the wry smirk on the face of Norman.
There are many reference to the play & to Norman Williams online. The play was a huge success that toured Europe and the US.
I do have further detail that was passed to me referring to the painting.
There is a signature lower right that further to my research is that of Sir William Oliphant Hutchison.
The centre frame stretcher shows a stamp for the frame maker Charles Henry West 117 Finchley Road N.W.3. I have researched this further and the address is relevant to the other factors of my research.
I will provide prints of all information that I hold.
The picture and the frame are in general good condition.
The canvas shows historic patching.
It remains unlined and is a little thin in places but perfectly sound.
The picture is a superb 'decorative piece' which displays well.
