We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely oil on canvas by the artist Sir Alfred Edward East RA, PRBA, RI, RE, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting is entitled verso on an old typed label 'Autumn Bradgate Park Leicestershire'. The painting depicts an autumnal scene with a pair on swans on the lake, with reeded banks and silver birch trees.

Sir Alfred East was born in Kettering Northamptonshire on 15th December 1844 and died on September 28th 1913. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and in Paris under Bougereau and Tony Fleury. He moved to London in 1883. He was the author of The Art of Landscape Paiting in Oil Colours which was published in 1906.

In 1888 he had a shared exhibition at the Fine Art Society with T. C. Gotch and W. A. Ingram, after which he was commissioned to spend 6 months in Japan painting that country and its people. On his return he exhibited 104 paintings at the Fine Art Society which was a great success. He also travelled to France, Spain, Italy and Morocco.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Academy in 1899 and a full Member in 1913 on his deathbed. In 1906 he was elected President of the Royal Society of British Artists, an office he held until his death. He became an RI in 1887 and an RE in 1885. He was knighted byKing Edward VII in 1910.

He died at his London home on September 28th 1913 and his body was taken to lie in state at the Sir Alfred East Art Gallery in Kettering, which had opened in July 1913, designed by J. A. Gotch and where a large collection of his work may be seen today.
