Striking 19th.c. portrait of a pious young woman at prayer, possibly Mary Magdalene, c.1870. In oil on canvas, shown half length with her hands clasped and her eyes raised to heaven. Other than a book of gospels she is depicted free of earthly possessions, her hair long and untied, her body naked apart from a course brown cloth. Presented on the original stretcher and in the original gilded and ebonised frame. Wear to the paint surface and frame.
