Early Victorian Fusee Pocket Watch with Silver Dial.

A wonderful, premium quality, crafted silver fusee pocket watch, by watchmaker and silversmith, Joseph Antonio Pizzi, of Clerkenwell, London, who had a very eventful life.
Born 1803 in Gallarate, Northern Italy, Pizzi trained as a watchmaker in Switzerland. He is first recorded as residing in England in 1828, by which time, he had also qualified as a silversmith. He was in partnership with a jeweller and fellow Italian Anthony Ortelli (with whom he also lodged), working as a watchmaker and silversmith from Market Place, Buckingham.
From 1836, Pizzi was then recorded as being in his second partnership with another jeweller of Italian descent, John Cetti. Again, Pizzi was listed as a watchmaker and silversmith, and the pair were still working in Buckingham. However, this second partnership did not last too long, being gazetted as “Dissolved” due to “Bankruptcy” in August 1840. Pizzi was next seen working on his own as a watchmaker in Clerkenwell, London, (c1841-1844), from where this very fine timepiece would have been made.
In February 1845 Pizzi became a British Citizen, at which time he was living (and hence, probably working), from Billericay in Essex. By 1851, it appears that Pizzi had taken a complete change of profession, being recorded on the census as a “Proprietor of Estate Houses Land” at Park Lane, East Hordon, Brentwood in Essex, (presumably this meant an estate manager for a local landowner?) In October 1854, then in his 51st year, Pizzi married Madalyn Seymore in the “City of London”, the 31-year-old widowed daughter of local Brentwood landowner James Seymore, after which the newly married couple lived in Billericay, Essex.
Maybe due to the generosity of his now father-in-law, James Seymour, and/or through his own endeavours, by 1871 (now aged 68), Pizzi had become registered as a “Gentleman Farmer”, operating from “Pound Pizzi’s Farm”, Great Warley, Essex. It is not known what happened to Pizzi after this, but up until 1871, he had certainly lived a most full and interesting life!
Hallmarked London 1843, this scarce and diminutive Pizzi watch has a silver dial with gold hands, raised gold numerals and lavishly engraved silver floral decoration to the centre. The fine fusee movement has a silver balance and diamond end stone, and the case maker was Samuel Saltmarsh (“SS”), of Clerkenwell, London and movement serial number is “3212.”
The watch comes in an executive Pu leather storage / display case with a winding key, together with instructions on how to wind and set the watch time.
Note: This watch does not come with a chain or fob. If you require a silver chain/fob from our large stock, please contact us for advice.
