We are delighted to offer for sale this provenanced oil on canvas by the artist Daisy Radcliffe Beresford, nee Clague, who has signed the portrait in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1936.

On the canvas verso, she has entitled the portrait 'Averil Kingston Beresford painted by her mother Daisy Radcliffe Beresford (Mrs.) nee Clague The Hall Studios Grove End Road St. John's Wood N.W.8. March 1936.

Her daughter Averil who later became Averil Spence, and who is the subject of this painting, wrote an unpublished biography of her father, which was finished by her husband after her death.

Her other daughter Vivian, became the sculptor Vivian Bartholomew.

Daisy Radcliffe Clague, was a student at the Royal Academy Schools in the early years of the 20th Century, where she met her future husband, the eminent artist and official war artist Frank Ernest Beresford (1881-1955), whom she married in 1910.

She was a talented portraitist, miniaturist and interior and landscape painter. She had earlier studied art at Heatherley's. At the RA Schools, she was awarded 3 silver and 2 bronze medals. She obtained the Art Class Teacher's Certificate at the age of 13 and her Art Mistress' Certificate at age 16.

There are three of her paintings in the National Collection, at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the City of London Corporation and Tenterden Town Council.

Daisy is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant Waters and The Dictionary of British Artists (Collector's Club).

She exhibited from 1904-1938 and showed 12 paintings at the Royal Academy and 1 at the Society of Women Artists.

Auction results for this artist may be found at the usual sites, but a large number of her paintings are still in private hands and in the collection of the family.

She died in 1939, three years after painting this portrait.

Provenance by descent through the family.
