Miniature Portrait of Lady Scott C1827

Exquisite Regency Miniature Scottish Portrait of Lady Scott (Alicia Anne Spottiswoode), c.1827
Circle of William Douglas, RSA (1780–1832), Edinburgh
Subject & Medium
This refined portrait miniature depicts Lady Scott (Alicia Anne Spottiswoode, 1810–1900), later wife of Sir William Scott of Ancrum, 6th Baronet. Painted when she was around 17 years old, Alicia Anne appears in a gown of soft cream and pale rose, trimmed with delicate ruffles, and draped in an ermine-trimmed cloak. Pearls crown her hair and circle her neck, while a miniature pendant rests on her breast — all signifiers of her status within Scottish aristocracy.
Executed in watercolour with fine gouache highlights on panel, the artist achieves both subtlety and brilliance: porcelain-like flesh tones, crisp details in jewels and fabrics, and a luminous finish.
Composition & Technique
Lady Scott is shown three-quarter facing, her gaze serene and direct, set against a cool bluish-green wash that enhances her fair complexion and elegant attire.
Skin tones: Warm peach and rose washes, stippled with precision.
Hair: Rich chestnut brown with golden highlights, arranged in ringlets and strung with pearls.
Jewelry: Pearls heightened with bright white bodycolour gold clasp subtly defined.
Cloak: Creams and greys give texture to the ermine, contrasting against the smooth gown.
Background: A soft green-blue wash creates depth and luminosity, characteristic of Edinburgh miniature painting in the 1820s.
The interplay of pastel washes and precise highlights demonstrates the mastery typical of leading professional miniaturists of the era.
About the Sitter
Alicia Anne Spottiswoode (1810–1900) was born into the distinguished Spottiswoode family of Berwickshire, Scotland. In 1836 she married Sir William Scott, 6th Baronet of Ancrum, becoming Lady Scott of Ancrum.
She was celebrated not only for her beauty but also for her musical talents, publishing numerous songs and ballads inspired by Scottish traditions. Her compositions were performed widely in Victorian society, earning her recognition as a cultural patroness. Through her marriage and family heritage, Lady Scott was closely linked to the Scott family of Abbotsford, descendants of Sir Walter Scott. Her long life, spanning nearly a century, connected the Regency, early Victorian, and later 19th-century cultural worlds.
The Artist
Attribution: Circle of William Douglas, RSA (1780–1832).
Douglas was Edinburgh’s foremost miniature painter of the early 19th century, appointed Miniature Painter in Scotland to Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold in 1817. Known for his “tasteful and delicate execution,” he attracted an aristocratic clientele, particularly in the Scottish Borders.
This work bears strong stylistic affinities with Douglas’s miniatures of the 1820s: the cool blue-green ground, the jewel highlights in opaque bodycolour, and the porcelain modelling of the features. These qualities, combined with the sitter’s provenance and c.1827 dating, strongly suggest an association with Douglas or his circle.
Signature
Unsigned, as was common in miniatures of the period. The sitter’s identity is secured by the inscription “Lady Scott” on the reverse.
Framed Presentation
The portrait is contained in its original gilt-metal oval frame with suspension loop, retaining its period authenticity. The reverse shows early marbled paper backing inscribed with the sitter’s name in a period hand.
Provenance
Acquired through a respected Northern Shire dealer and later catalogued by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. The reverse inscription identifies the sitter as Lady Scott, consistent with her known likeness and family history.
Why Collectors Will Value This Piece
Portrait of historical significance, depicting a distinguished aristocrat, composer, and cultural patron.
Likely linked to William Douglas, RSA, Scotland’s leading miniaturist of the Regency period.
Beautiful colour harmony — creams, rose, chestnut, and soft green-blue.
Preserved in its original gilt-metal frame with period backing and inscription.
A rare survival of Scottish Regency portraiture, combining artistry and provenance.
