A very practical piece of furniture, this 19th century mahogany butler’s tray has a useful stand which is later in date. The tray is a lovely red colour with a nice grain and the base is constructed of four panels in cross supports. The lift-up sides have reeding along the edges and the later stand matches in well with similar reeding along the tops of the cross stretchers. The stand has attractively carved corner supports and the legs have a five sided cross-section.

In the modern home, the design of this piece makes it a useful tray of good size which simply lifts off the stand, but can double up as a coffee table when the sides are folded down to increase the surface area and it is placed on the legs.

The piece is in good age-related condition. There are older scratches in the tray surface which have been polished out and the joints where the tray panels are quartered are wide, with a small crack in one corner of one panel. However, these faults are polished in and relatively unobtrusive. The hinges are in good condition and hold the sides up well.

This tray dates to circa 1840, although the stand is later, and is made of mahogany. It originates from England.
