Leather Cased 66ft Steel Tape Measure, J. Rabone
This is a top quality Leather Bound 66ft Steel Tape Measure with a Brass winder. The circular tape measure is bound in chestnut coloured leather and the steel tape is blackened so that the markings stand out clearly. It measures in feet and inches only as you would expect of a pre-WW2 tape measure.
The tape measure was made in Birmingham by the famous firm of John Rabone & Sons and dates to around the 1930s. John Rabone & Sons were the most renowned manufacturers of rulers, tape measures and other measuring devices throughout their existence. The firm traced its origins back to Michael Rabone, who was active in Birmingham in the 1780s and probably earlier. John Rabone established the company as John Rabone & Sons in 1784 and they retained this name and under the control of the Rabone family until they merged with James Chesterman & Co in 1963 to form Rabone Chesterman.
Condition is very good, with just a few scuff marks on the leather outer. The tape extends freely and remains out until it is reeled back in by the brass winder, which is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The measure is 11cm / 4.25ins in diameter 2.5ins / 1in deep. It weighs in at 683g / 24oz.
The leather is embossed around the winder with the wording John Rabone & Sons, Birmingham, England. The brass winder is engraved 66ft. The first few inches of the tape are marked London, John Rabone & Sons Makers, Birmingham, England, Made In England. The company had a showroom in London as well as their factory in Birmingham.
