Large c.1850 Black Painted Pine Chest of Drawers

The early to mid-Victorian period pine carcass of unusually large proportions with a fabulous craquelure period black painted finish over a slightly earlier brown stained coat having an arrangement of five drawers, two short over three long, with the original knob handles to each, the whole sitting on bun feet.
The drawers glide relatively smoothly, the whole proves sturdy and in good original order. The paintwork is extraordinary. The chest has probably sat in the front room close to the fireplace and as such the craqulure present is wonderfully redolent and proves consistent to each side though with more surface wear from the human touch to the top. The onion bun feet are all original though have some losses to their tips from where the chest has been moved around. There is only one section of loss which is the lower moulding to the left flank. We have waxed her to retain the current patina and finish.
We’ve never seen a chest with paintwork as suggestive as this, it proves a real antique lovers piece. Hauntingly beautiful.
