We are delighted to offer for sale this amazing trompe l'oeil oil painting on canvas by the East Anglian artist John Ridgewell who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner of the landscape and entitled it on a piece of paper attached 'Spring at Jervaulx Abbey'. This painting does indeed trick the eye! The landscape, which is a view of the park of Jervaux Abbey in Yorkshire, appears to be mounted within a gold edged mount and then framed, although the bottom of the painting appears to be coming towards you on a ledge which sticks forward from the rest, judging from the shadow beneath it. This, however, is the brilliance of the piece. The gold line around the 'mount' is painted, as indeed is the rest of the painting. The mount has texture, although the landscape is much smoother, possible being achieved by more primer under the oil.

John Ridgwell was born in Essex in 1937 and studied at Colchester School of Art and then the Royal College of Art, hence the ARCA after his name. He taught at Scarborough College of Art 1961-1966.

He exhibited widely including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and in York at the Austen Hayes Gallery and Grape Lane Gallery. His early work comprised abstract landscapes, but his later work shows very surrealist tendencies.

Jervaulx Abbey is a privately owned ruin of a Cistercian abbey in Yorkshire near Ripon and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Please visit their website for pictures.

John Ridgewell sadly died in 2004.

The painting has been newly framed in a 1 7/8" gilt frame to suit and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
