Iona Silver "Nunnery" Fork, CAI, 1940s/50s

The great Scottish silversmith and designer Alexander Ritchie came to the island of Iona in the 1890s at the height of the Scottish Arts & Crafts movement and was a key player in the "rediscovery" of Celtic art forms. Archaeological excavations at the Iona nunnery in 1922/23 discovered a set of spoons from the 13th century and these inspired Ritchie to create his "Nunnery" pattern. After Ritchie's death in 1941 his designs were inherited by the newly set up Celtic Art Industries on Iona and they carried on producing the "Nunnery" pattern through the 1940s & 50s.
This is a CAI "Nunnery" fork from this period. As was standard, the pieces made for sale in the island shop set up by Ritchie were not hallmarked but simply stamped with Iona, Scotland, Sterling and the CAI makers' mark.
The fork is beautifully made to Alexander Ritchie's design. It is 15cm long and weighs 19.5g. These "Nunnery" pattern pieces are extremely collectable and this would be a great piece for any lover of Celtic craftsmanship. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
