Handsome William IV Oak & Mahogany Pembroke Table

The mahogany and oak Pembroke table having two d-shaped leaves of good colour, the friezes with ebony stringing, the whole bearing a single drawer with dummy drawer to the reverse, the whole on ring turned oak legs survives from the second quarter of the nineteenth century.
The table has several marks to the top, including burn marks and pitting, making for a piece with a host of character. The oak ring turned legs have some nibbled losses to the extremities and the castors have long since been absent. Some of the knob handles are slightly later replacements but in keeping. The colour is rich and deep and we have oiled and waxed the piece to bring its patina to the fore.
The brief reign of William IV c.1835-40 was an important period of transition between the Regency and Victorian eras. Classically inspired architecture of the Regency period was still popular, but the romanticism that was to characterise the Victorian era had begun to take hold. As such the antique furniture of the William IV period is essentially a more robust and chunkier version of the furniture made in the Regency period. The Pembroke table was perhaps named after Mary Herbert, Countess of Pembroke (1561–1621), who originally ordered its design.
If you like your antique tables to offer good value for money, have bags of country house character and appreciate the beauty of period timber then this is for you. Timeless.
