Gold & enamel pair cases - William Mayo, 1819

Good quality English verge in wonderful earlier gold and enamel pair case. Beautiful amethyst gilloche enamel and central painted scene.
MOVEMENT Good verge movement, fully signed and numbered (536). All in excellent original condition and running well. The gilding is bright and the blued screws unscratched.
DIAL Cream enamel dial with unusual gilt numerals. There is a short hairline across the edge at 3 (hidden by the bezel) and repairs around 6 o'clock at the opening catch. Nice matching gold Breguet style hands.
INNER CASE Hallmarks for 18ct gold, London, 1819, maker WB JH. Very nice condition throughout. The case snaps shut nicely and the high dome crystal has no chips and just some light scratches. Beautiful original bow and stem.
OUTER CASE Wonderful gold and enamel case. Hallmarks for 22ct gold, London, 1780, maker IW. This is possibly John Wright of Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell, London.
The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut nicely. The bezel is slightly twisted (it does snap shut but gapes slightly) and has lost much of the enamel.
The back of the case is in near perfect condition. Just a few tiny pieces of enamel missing from the border and some surface scratches to the amethyst guilloche enamel and the painted centre.
No restoration to the case.
William Mayo is listed as working in Coventry between 1816 and 1850.
The inner gold case is a perfect fit for the outer and this movement and inner case may have been made specifically for this beautiful 18th century outer case. Free worldwide postage.
Payments by cheque, bank transfer, credit & debit cards and Paypal accepted.
