George V Silver Capstan Inkwell, W. Hutton, 1919

This is a good quality George V Sterling Silver Inkwell in capstan form. The inkwell is made by renowned silversiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd in Birmingham and dates to 1919. William Hutton founded the firm in Birmingham in 1800 and later established premises in both Sheffield and London. The company remained in the control of the Hutton family until 1930 when it was bought out by James Dixon & Sons.
This is a very well made inkwell in the capstan style, with a wide circular base but unusually the inkwell is offset to one side rather than being in the centre of the circle. The inside of the lid is gilded. It has its original clear glass liner. The base is weighted with wood for stability. The inkwell would look very stylish on a desk today or be great for anyone who loves calligraphy.
Although condition is generally very good, the inkwell has seen some use and has a few tiny dings around the base and some superficial surface wear. The underside is covered with a circle of green baize which has probably been put on later, the original would most likely have been a very thin leather circle. The glass liner is in good condition with no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The base of the inkwell is 10.2cm / 4" in diameter and it stands 4.8cm / 1.9" high. It weighs 247.7g / 8.37oz but this does of course include the weighting in the base.
The hallmarks on the side of the base are rubbed but the ones inside the lid are crisp and clear. Between them we have the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay make for Birmingham, the date letter "u" for 1919 and the distinctive WH & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the inkwell.
Overseas customers please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
