A lovely folk art picture by George Smart,the tailor from frant.
Old Bright The Postman.
George Smart A Cut-Felt Collage Picture of Old Bright The Postman, early 19th century, worked in cloth and velvet with a village postman and his donkey before a painted scene, inscribed on the mile post 2 Mile from Twell 1837, 27cm by 20cm, on the reverse applied with original black and white engraved label G.Smart Maker of Cloth & Velvet Figures, Frant, Near Tunbridge Wells, the whole in a mahogany frame
George Smart (d.1846) was a tailor of Frant near Tunbridge Wells, who was well known for these individual pictures of local characters which were popular with tourists visiting the Regency spa of Royal Tunbridge Wells. Other well known subjects by this artist included the Earthstopper and the Goosewoman.
