George III Silver Candle Snuffers, London,1810
Here we have a superb quality Pair of George III Sterling Silver Candle Snuffers / Wick Trimmers. The scissor action snuffers have octagonal finger ring handles and are decorated with shell motifs. They stand on three baluster feet. The initials P P are elegantly engraved on the side.
The snuffers were made in London by celebrated silversmiths Rebecca Emes and Edward Barnard and date to 1810. John Emes was an important silversmith in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. After his death in 1808 the business was continued by his wife Rebecca who was soon joined by Edward Barnard, who had been her husband’s journeyman. After Rebecca’s death in 1828, the firm became the famous Edward Barnard & Sons.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 215 years of good service. The scissor action is in full working order and they open and shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The snuffers are 17.3cm / 6.8ins long, 5.1cm / 2ins wide and stand 3.9cm / 1.5ins high. They weigh in at a very respectable 101.9g / 3.59oz.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the snuffer, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter P for 1810, the George III duty mark and the R E over E B makers' mark for Rebecca Emes and Edward Barnard.
