George I Figured Walnut Bureau

No: 11190
A very good George I early 18th century Walnut Bureau quarter veneered and feather banded throughout, the fall opening onto lopers to reveal a feather banded central door flanked by 7 feather banded small drawers and 2 secret drawers all above two half-width and three full-width feather-banded, graduated, cockbeaded drawers, the whole raised on shaped bracket feet. This bureau has an excellent colour and grain retaining the original brass backplates and loops.
Circa 1720 Price: £6250-00p.
Height: 40 ½” (103 cm), Width: 37” (94 cm), Depth: 21 ½” (55 cm)
Note: It is always interesting to compare pieces to see how styles, as well as cabinetmaking techniques, changed over the years. The 17th century technique of having a moulded bead on the carcass surrounding drawers on cabinet furniture yielded in the 18th century. It became a cockbeaded edge on the drawers themselves to protect the veneered sections of the drawers. This lasted into the 19th century.
