A stunning Victorian harlequin davenport from the workshops of the renown Benjamin Taylor & Sons of 67, Great Dover St. where they worked until 1873 and they are listed in the Dictionary of English Furniture Makers. Made from beautifully figured burr walnut, the hidden sprung stationary compartment has a satinwood interior with 3 small walnut drawers and pigeon holes with a very good fret carved gallery above. The piano shaped fall opens to reveal a 2 drawer interior and an adjustable pull out writing/reading slope with green and gold tooled leather writing surface an ebonised pen tray, space for 2 ink pots. The panelled front with well carved supports resting on a concave shaped plinth with turned bun feet and hidden castors. The right hand side with 4 mahogany lined drawers, 2 with the maker’s stamp and all with turned walnut knobs, brass escutcheons and working locks (with keys). The left side with false drawers and matching turned knobs and escutcheons. The freestanding back with matching figured walnut panel and applied mouldings. The whole in very good condition with good patina. Davenports of this design are often referred to as Harlequin, Pop up, Piano top, or Jack in the box davenports. More photos available.
