This Fine Georgian Mahogany Architect's Desk or Library Table dates from circa 1820. The Double-depth Secretaire Drawer pulls forward to reveal a baixe-lined section, the centre of which can be raised on a ratchet. When this section is slid back six compartments are revealed, each inlaid with letters of the alphabet. There is a secret drawer behind.
The Desk top can be raised on two ratchets which sit in brass steps.
The quality, overall design and interesting features lead to a Gillows attribution. Similar Desks are illustrated in Susan E. Stuart's Book on Gillows.
The Desk is free-standing. The back is shown in the final photograph.
The condition is good and functions well.
