We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely panoramic oil on canvas by the artist Edmund Henry Dedrick Niemann, who has signed the painting Niemann in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts one of his typical panoramic views of Yorkshire, with a river valley in the distance, a village with a church below the hilltop and a woman and child seated on a grassy mound, with a flock of sheep grazing to the right. The valley is full of mist, which is reaching up between the trees. There is a pond or stream in the foreground, its banks covered in brambles.

Please note that this artist is frequently catalogued and listed as Edward Henry Niemann, but this is incorrect according to Births, Marriages and Deaths and Census Records.

Edmund Henry Niemann was born in Reading in 1842, the son of the well known artist Edmund John Niemann 1813-1876, who exhibited some 177 paintings at London exhibitions. He received his artistic training under the tutelage of his father and was for some while his assistant before commencing his career as a landscape painter in his own right. His landscapes do take after those of his father and are often panoramic and set in Yorkshire.

According to Census records, he moved quite frequently, from 1851 in Clerkenwell, 1871 in Lambeth, 1881 Herne Hill, 1891 Richmond in Surrey and by 1910 he was living at The Glebe, Brixton Hill, South London, where he died in 1910. He had married his wife Emma Harriet Blythe, born 1856, in 1879 and they had a total of 5 daughters, one of whom died in her first year, and a son Edmund John, after his father.
The family name in of German derivation, as his grandfather was born in Westphalia, but lived and worked in London at Lloyds of London.

He exhibited in 1863 and 1867 at the British Institution in London and at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin 1884-1887. There are 3 of his paintings in the National Collection, 2 ast Middlesbrough Institute and 1 at Chertsey Museum, a view of Chertsey. These can be viewed at ArtUK by putting the artist's name into google.

His exhibitions may be found in Graves Dictionary and his biographical details are listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and Benezit.

The painting is framed in an ornate, swept, gilt frame and will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
