Danish Silver Baby Spoon, Grann & Laglye, 1933
This is a delightful Danish 826 Silver Baby Feeding Spoon from the 1930s. The spoon has a broad stem which is decorated at the top with an image of someone holding an umbrella to shelter a child sleeping in bed. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind making this ideal as a Christening or New Baby gift.
The spoon was made in Denmark by silversmiths Grann & Laglye and assayed in Copenhagen in 1933. The firm was founded by Johannes Lauritz Grann and Johannes Laglye in the early years of the 20th century. They are particularly associated with the Skønvirke style (the Danish equivalent of Art Nouveau, literally meaning beautiful work). They produced silverware and exquisite jewellery of very high quality. The company was bought by Toxsvaerd in 1955.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. It seems likely that this has been kept as a treasured item and seen little or no use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 15cm / 5.9ins long and weighs in at a respectable 29.8g / 1oz of solid silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the three towers mark for Danish 826 silver above the number 33 for 1933, the JS monogram assayers mark for Johannes Siggaard of Copenhagen, the Thor's hammer mark meaning Quality Product - Made in Denmark and the distinctive G L monogram makers' mark for Grann & Laglye.
