Charles Oswald Oil Painting Highland Cattle Sunset
We are offering for sale this lovely oil on canvas by the artist CHARLES W. OSWALD, who has signed the painting C.W. Oswald in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a Highland landscape at sunset, with three shaggy, highland cattle watering at the edge of a stream or burn, in the foreground. In fact, the black one is actually standing in the water, or maybe they are just crossing the burn. The mist is billowing over the mountains into the valleys and the setting sun is turning the tops of the lowest clouds pink.
We are also listing the companion painting to this one, painted in the early morning.
CHARLES W. OSWALD was a Liverpool artist who, though very prolific, exhibited very little. He specialised in highland landscapes, rural scenes and painting featuring cattle and and working horses painted in oils. He lived at 258 Whitefield Road in Liverpool and did exhibit at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool in 1892. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists, Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child and A Dictionary of Neglected Artists by Jeremy Wood.
Auction results and examples of work by this artist may be found at artprice (127 listings), findartinfo (70), artnet (48) and askart (13).
The painting has been newly framed in a 4 1/4" ornate swept gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
