We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely oil on canvas by the artist C. AUSTIN, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. It is remotely possible that the initial, which is not that clear is either F. or E. and apparently, this has caused confusion at auction.

As we are unsure of the initial, we cannot offer any biographical information about the artist, but according to a painting in similar style listed by artnet.com as C. Austin, and dated 1876, it is fair to say that it is 19th Century.

The painting is an accomplished oil of a fast moving river, gushing over two small waterfalls. The river has rocky banks and there is a small path along the left bank. There are hills in the background. We are unsure of the location, but it could be in the Lake District and Scotland.

Auction results for works listed under C. Austin can be found at artnet.com (11 listings) and findartinfo.com (2). An oil of a landscape with bridge and river by this artist was sold in the USA in 2010 for £732.

The painting is framed in its original 4 1/2" gilt frame and slip and is ready to hang.
