Beautiful George II Oak Bureau c.1750

On behalf of a regular client and collector of oak, this beautiful small George II oak bureau has a wonderful colour and deep natural patination.
This was purchased from Owen Humble Antiques (LAPADA) in Newcastle in 1992 – a long established dealer of high quality antiques which is still, I believe, in business through Owen’s son Michael.
Made by very skilled hands, the bureau has a truly lovely colour, a well fitted interior of small oak lined drawers and pigeon holes and it is of charmingly small proportions.
The backboards, drawer linings and carcase are all original. The principal drawers are oak lined also with bottom boards running front to back, correct for construction techniques in use at this date, and they open and close smoothly with lovely quality brass handles and escutcheons which are original also. The handles have beautifully smoothed edges which only time and use can produce. The interior small button brass handles are original also. Three locks are absent, one original iron lock is present but there is no key. It may be possible to have period locks fitted but the locks are very small and it may take some time and cost a fairly significant sum to have this done by our restorer.
All set on the original bracket feet and with early, possibly original, iron key which operates the lock to the fall.
As with any period antique furniture, it is to be expected that the bureau has had repairs, small alterations and restorations during the course of its life
The price paid in 1992 was a considerable sum – a fortune for that period - and the original receipt will be made available to the purchaser.
A reluctant sale due to a house move. The bureau now seeks a new custodian who will care for it in the years to come so that it can be used and enjoyed by future generations.
Dimensions are:
34 inches wide, 19 inches deep and 38 inches high.
From floor to fall 29 inches high.
For metric please multiply by 2.5 I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
