Antique silver Doxa pocket watch, with niello case
Antique silver Doxa pocket watch, with niello case.
The watch has a Swiss 15-jewel stem-winding movement, signed Doxa, which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover signed Doxa with various medal from 1905.
The watch measures 48mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the loop. The case is silver and there are .800 silver marks inside the two case backs. .800 silver is a lower grade of sterling silver which is .925. the case backs are also signed Doxa.
The case is niello, a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, especially silver, as this particular watch. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or at least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. The case back also has a rose gold vacant cartouche. The case has light surface scratches mainly to the edge but overall it is in nice condition for a 1920s piece.
The glass lens is in good condition.
The signed dial has its original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track and red 24 hour markers. The dial is in nice condition with only the odd faint minor mark.
