This is a beautiful example of an early 19th Century baby’s bonnet, probably dating from the 1830s or earlier. It is made of very fine cotton and is of the period when the size and fit were adjusted by very fine drawstrings in the body of the bonnet. In this case there are seven of the channels for the ties, which have been fastened off. There are ties at the back of the neck to adjust the size. The crown is gathered on to a circular piece of white work embroidery, with a large flower surrounded by a garland of tiny florets. The whole bonnet is worked by hand. The measurement of the brim is just over 11 inches and the bottom edge 9 1/2 inches.
The quality of the hand sewing is of the finest and I can find no damage except for a tiny hole in the brim between the first and second channels.
This is a lovely little bonnet, very typical of its period, and would make a good example for a collection.
