Adjustable Reading Stand & Table by Filmer & Sons.


Fabulous mid 19th.c. adjustable combined reading or music stand and side table by the acclaimed British makers T.H Filmer & Sons of London c.1870. Designed to stand beside a chair or bed with walnut book holder with brass page stays on an articulated arm and a 14½” diameter circular wine table with moulded edge. Height adjustable on a telescopic column, the height, angle and horizontal position of the book stand can also be further adjusted with a lockable ball and socket joint below and movable joints in the arm (stamped Norths Patent on the mechanism). On a heavy iron base for stability with four crisply cast claw feet. Original condition with a large brass maker’s badge to the underside of the book stand.
Thomas Henry Filmer established his upholstery and cabinet making business at 34 Berners Street (off Oxford St) London in 1835. A high-end maker, their works were featured in several of the great international trade exhibitions of the 1860’s and 70’s. A teapoy by Filmer & Son can be found in the antique furniture collections of the Victorian and Albert museum.
