A WW1 silver Red Cross nurse’s fob watch
A WW1 silver Red Cross nurse’s fob watch.
The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The watch measures 34mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks London import marks inside both of the case backs, although the marks are rubbed, together with a sponsor’s mark for the watch importer George Stockwell. From 1 June 1907, Stockwells acted as assay agents, facilitating the import into Britain of foreign gold and silver items, which had to be assayed and hallmarked in a UK assay office before being released for retail.
The red enamel cross to the case back is quite an unusual feature and indicates that it probably would have been used by a WW1 nurse within a military hospital situation. The case has minor surface marks but overall is in nice condition.
The watch glass is in good order.
The white enamel dial is in lovely condition and has blued steel hands and an outer minute track. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
